Finding Your Academic(Thesis) Advisor
In our program, students are required to enter the laboratory for research work under the guidance of the advisor during the study period. You have to approach a professor for the research supervision. The topic of the thesis must get the approval of the advisor. The roles of an advisor include helping students set their thesis topic, providing necessary resources for conducting research, and monitoring students’ progress. Therefore, it is important to seek an advisor who can help individual student achieve their goals.
Please note that the program office does not assign advisors. You are responsible for finding one yourself. We strongly encourage prospective students to reach out the potential advisors as soon as they decide to apply.
Here are some steps you can take to find a suitable advisor:
1. Take a look at the professor's research interests and the lab’s website, or read a few articles published by the professor.
2. Email the professor to introduce yourself. Use a concise, clear subject line and attach your CV. Then, schedule an individual interview with the professor. You can ask about the ongoing research projects, the expectations in terms of working hours and graduation requirements, and possible topics if you choose to join his/her lab.
3. Talk with current and former students of the lab to understand the lab culture, metoring style, and overall environment from students’ perspective.
4. Identify and contact two to three potential advisors in case your top choice does not have open positions.
