Finding Your Academic Advisor

In our program, students are required to enter the laboratory for research work under the guidance of the supervisor during the study period. You have to approach a professor for the research supervision. The topic of the thesis must get the approval of the supervisor. The roles of a thesis advisor include helping students set their thesis topic, providing necessary resources for conducting research, and monitoring students’ progress. Therefore, it is important to seek a thesis advisor who can help individual student achieve their goals. The program office will not help to assign or designate advisors to you. You have to find the advisor by yourself. Usually, we will encourage students to approach the potential professors once they decide to apply to our program.

Here are some steps you can take to find a suitable advisor:

1. Take a look at the professor's research interests and the lab’s website, or read a few articles published by the professor.

2. Email or schedule an individual interview with the professor. You can ask about the ongoing research projects, the expectations in terms of working hours and graduation requirements, and possible topics if you choose to join his/her lab.

3. Talk with current and former students of the lab to understand the working atmosphere from students’ perspective.
